Ground & Earth is a passion project that aims to combine the clean and structured forms of traditional Japanese architecture with the grounded atmosphere of Mid Century Modern design.

Inspired by a traditional Japanese house floorplan, the west side of the house on the first floor hosts the shared spaces: dining and living room, kitchen, water closet, walkway and courtyard garden.
In contrast, the east side of the first floor holds the master bedroom and ensuite, guest room, laundry room and staircase.

The ground floor houses an array of browns, coppers, rusts and reds, emulating the rich earth that lays within the Australian landscape. The mix of matte and metallic tiles, light and dark wood and grid door frames invites visual and tactile interest.

The powder rooms contrast these deep reds with tones that mimic eucalyptus leaves. The fresh green divides the spaces by function using colour as a mental transition.

The second floor transitions into work-play balance, where inhabitants occupy their own office and hobby rooms for professional, creative and social activities. The large rumpus room offers a second social space for organised events with enough room for the body’s movements.
The green motifs continue with natural tatami flooring and dark custom joineries. This large room combines the duality of an expansive activity space with a restful sofa alcove.
